Dear 2011 Bridge Runner,
On Monday, you’ll join about 300 others on the Mackinac Bridge to run the slightly more than four miles across. Hosted by the Michigan Fitness Foundation, the Bridge Run is just one event of many designed to get Michigan moving toward a healthier lifestyle. Thank you for participating!
This year, we’ve launched a demonstration project designed to show how your effort in the Labor Day 2011 Bridge Run will contribute to a healthier Michigan at http://www.ridestreaming.com
Using information provided by all of the registered 2011 Bridge Run participants, we have calculated the projected “health impact” of the event. We’ve also provided an individualized projection for each runner. Just find your name in the list and click to see your personal projection and a comparison of others’ in your age group.
After the race, be sure to check the website again to see a comparison of our projections with the actual event data, including your results!
Our aim is to increase awareness of the ways events like this one constitute a public good, and to help individuals evaluate and celebrate their contribution to a healthier Michigan. We have plans to expand the system to work with your mobile device to provide real-time updates for future events.
Bridge Run Analytics is part of a demonstration project sponsored by the Michigan Fitness Foundation, Michigan State University, and One Health Knowledge Initiatives. The broad goal of the project is to use the power of the web and social media to get Michigan moving and making healthy choices that benefit the whole state.
The Bridge Run Analytics project is just a demonstration at the present time. But in the near future, we hope to use the infrastructure represented here for calculating public health impact in a study of the way feedback like the information provided here may motivate individuals to make healthy decisions. The activity on the bridge today is just a snapshot of one event. We think that with broader awareness of the benefits of exercise and healthy eating, more Michiganders might join their neighbors in similar events all around the state!
Thanks so much for your participation in this year’s Bridge Run. We hope you have a great run on Monday morning!

I finished in first place for women 50 and up but I am showing up as in ’0′ place. The first place Person on the overall is also showing as in ’0′ in his age group. I think you have a bug in your software!
Thanks and please correct.

Hi Mary,
This was an unfortunate accident in the chip timer system. In some cases, the chip timer did not accurately assign runners a place in their age group. As a result, some runners have a value of ‘0’ for this field.
However, runners are listed in the results according to the time it took them to complete the run, which should show accurate placement.
